ENG1 Certificates & Immigration on the French Riviera

The ENG1 medical certificate is a legal requirement for crew working on commercially operated yachts, and it must always be valid. If it expires, a crew member can’t legally sail. On the French Riviera, ENG1 exams can only be carried out by doctors approved by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), and there are only a handful in the area. That limited availability can quickly become a bottleneck, especially during busy periods. Swift Marine works directly with these approved doctors to secure appointments efficiently, whether it’s for a first-time medical or a renewal. For non-EU crew members, immigration formalities add another layer of complexity. Schengen entry requirements, transit visas, and border stamping procedures (IN/OUT) depend on several factors: the crew member’s nationality, the yacht’s flag, and whether it’s operating privately or commercially. Small mistakes or missing paperwork can lead to serious issues for both the individual and the vessel. Our team handles the preparation of port letters, guarantee letters, and the coordination with immigration authorities (Police aux Frontières) to ensure each crew member’s situation is correctly managed — discreetly and in compliance with applicable rules.

Operational Insights

Visa requirements depend on the crew member's nationality, the yacht's flag state, and whether the vessel is operating privately or commercially. The key distinctions are: EU and EEA nationals generally have the right to work in France without additional authorisation. Non-EU nationals typically require a valid Schengen visa to enter French territory, including when joining a vessel in a French port, particularly on the French Riviera.
Depending on nationality, this may be a single-entry or multiple-entry visa. Crew on commercial yachts may face additional requirements related to work authorisation, depending on their nationality and the flag state's agreements. Requirements can change, and the applicable rules depend on the specific situation. Swift Marine helps captains and crew clarify what applies in each case, prepares the necessary supporting documentation (including port letters and guarantee letters), and coordinates with the Police aux Frontières (PAF) where required.
This is a situation that requires immediate attention. Overstaying a Schengen visa — even by a short period — can result in the crew member being barred from re-entering the Schengen Area for a significant period, and may create complications for the vessel if the individual cannot be properly documented for departure. If a crew member is approaching the end of their permitted Schengen stay, the options depend on their nationality and circumstances.
In some cases, a departure from the Schengen Area and re-entry on a new visa is the only solution. In others, contacting the relevant authorities in advance to explain the operational context may be appropriate. Swift Marine advises on the available options and coordinates with the PAF to manage the situation as smoothly as possible. We strongly recommend addressing this before the visa expires rather than after.

The ENG1 is a medical fitness certificate required for crew working on commercially operated yachts. It is issued by doctors approved by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and confirms that the crew member is medically fit for seafaring duties. Validity is typically up to two years, though this may be reduced to one year depending on the crew member's age or the outcome of the medical assessment. An expired ENG1 prevents a crew member from legally serving on a commercial vessel, so renewals should be arranged well before the expiry date — ideally 4 to 6 weeks in advance to allow for any follow-up if medical issues arise.
ENG1 examinations must be conducted by doctors approved by the MCA. On the French Riviera, the number of approved practitioners is limited — appointments are available in the Antibes and Nice area through a small number of clinics and doctors experienced in working with yacht crew. There are no MCA-approved doctors at every port, so crew cannot simply walk into any medical practice. Swift Marine coordinates ENG1 appointments directly with approved practitioners. We schedule examinations in advance where possible, prepare the required documentation, and manage last-minute requests when crew schedules change. For crew arriving from outside the region, we can also advise on timing to ensure the examination fits within the vessel's schedule.
The examination itself typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes. The certificate is usually issued on the same day or within 24 hours of the appointment, provided no additional medical investigations are required. If the examining doctor identifies a condition requiring follow-up — a specialist referral, additional tests, or a second opinion — the process may take longer. For this reason, we advise against leaving ENG1 renewals until the last possible moment, particularly during peak season when appointment availability is tighter.
Yes. When a non-EU crew member joins or departs a vessel in a French port, the relevant border formalities must be completed with the Police aux Frontières (PAF). This includes arrival and departure stamping (IN/OUT) and, in some cases, submission of crew lists and supporting documentation. Swift Marine prepares the necessary paperwork — including port letters and guarantee letters where required — and accompanies or represents crew at the PAF when needed.
